If you liked Damon Salvatore, you’ll love Memnon
Tortured past, supernatural powers, and irresistible charm: Memnon is the ultimate anti-hero for Damon Salvatore fans
If you’re a fan of Damon Salvatore from The Vampire Diaries, there’s a high chance you’ll find yourself equally captivated by Memnon from Bewitched by Laura Thalassa. Both characters share similar qualities that make them unforgettable: tortured pasts, an aversion to love, and an undeniable charm that keeps us coming back for more. Though they come from different worlds—one filled with vampires and the other with ancient magic—they are remarkably alike in the ways they are shaped by their histories, their internal struggles, and their relationships. Let’s take a closer look at why Damon and Memnon are so similar, and why if you love one, you’re bound to love the other.
A Tragic Past that haunts them
Both Damon and Memnon are defined by the weight of their pasts. The scars of their histories shape who they are in the present, driving much of their behavior.
Damon Salvatore, a vampire who has lived for centuries, is haunted by the pain of losing his great love Katherine. The betrayal and heartbreak he endured turn him into a cynical, angry man who initially rejects love. His immortality only compounds the tragedy, forcing him to relive his pain over and over. He is unable to escape the long shadow of his past until he meets the protagonist, Elena, who is a dead ringer for the woman he loved and lost.
In Bewitched, Memnon also carries a heavy burden. As an ancient sorcerer cursed to centuries of sleep, he awakens in a world that has moved on without him, consumed by grief and fury over the death of his wife, Roxilana. He believes Selene, the protagonist, may be her reincarnation—a belief that drives both his rage and obsession. Like Damon, Memnon’s supernatural history is steeped in loss, and it haunts him.
A reluctance to love, yet drawn to it
One of the defining characteristics of both Damon and Memnon is their reluctance to embrace love, despite their overwhelming attraction to it.
Damon Salvatore’s journey with love is a rocky one. Early in The Vampire Diaries, Damon rejects love because he believes it will only bring him pain. He pushes away Elena multiple times, thinking that he’s not worthy of her affection and that his love will only cause her harm. His internal struggle is clear: he wants love but believes he’s unworthy of it, and this makes his eventual vulnerability all the more poignant.
Memnon begins Bewitched in a similarly closed-off emotional state. He’s consumed by vengeance, unwilling to feel anything for Selene beyond what she represents in his past. But as they’re drawn together, his bitterness starts to unravel. Despite his best efforts to stay guarded, his connection to Selene deepens—and he, too, must confront the feelings he’s buried for centuries.
Dark, Dangerous, and Irresistible
Both Damon and Memnon have a certain dark allure that makes them hard to resist. Their dangerous edges are part of what makes them so captivating.
Damon Salvatore is a classic example of the bad boy with a heart of gold. He’s sarcastic, charming, and often ruthless, yet there’s something undeniably magnetic about him. His sharp wit and dark humor make him irresistible, and even when he’s making mistakes, you can’t help but root for him. Damon walks the line between anti-hero and villain, and his dangerous nature makes him all the more intriguing.
Memnon may not share Damon’s humor, but he carries a similar dark intensity. As a powerful sorcerer, his magic is both beautiful and terrifying. He’s not easily read—his bitterness, power, and raw grief make him both dangerous and vulnerable. Like Damon, Memnon is a character who feels more real because of his contradictions.
The Journey toward Redemption
One of the most compelling aspects of both Damon and Memnon is their journey toward redemption. Both characters start off as deeply flawed individuals, and part of what makes them so appealing is watching them grow and change.
Damon Salvatore begins The Vampire Diaries as a character who is self-serving, bitter, and willing to hurt others in order to protect himself. However, as the series progresses, Damon starts to change. His relationship with Elena is a catalyst for this transformation, and over time, he learns to open up, face his demons, and allow himself to love. His journey toward redemption is long and difficult, but it’s also one of the most rewarding arcs in the series.
Similarly, Memnon goes through a similar transformation in Bewitched. While he starts off seeking vengeance and harboring deep anger toward the world, his relationship with Selene forces him to confront his past and his emotions. Slowly, Memnon begins to let go of the anger that has defined him for centuries, and he learns to embrace love and forgiveness. His redemption arc is pivotal to his character development and adds depth to his relationship with Selene.
For both men, their journeys are about overcoming their past mistakes, learning to trust again, and ultimately becoming better versions of themselves. It’s this progression that makes them so compelling and keeps us invested in their stories.
Supernatural Power and Immortality
Finally, the supernatural elements that define both Damon and Memnon’s worlds add another layer of intrigue to their characters.
Damon Salvatore is a vampire, and his immortality plays a central role in his story. While it gives him strength and power, it also isolates him from others, making it difficult for him to form lasting relationships. His immortality is both a blessing and a curse, and the weight of it is something he struggles with throughout The Vampire Diaries.
Memnon, on the other hand, is an ancient sorcerer, cursed to eternal sleep until he is awakened. His powers are directly tied to the magic that flows through him, and his connection to the supernatural is far more intricate than Damon’s. However, like Damon, Memnon’s power is both a gift and a burden. It gives him the ability to control magic, but it also distances him from the people around him, making it difficult for him to connect with others.
Both characters are defined by their supernatural abilities, and this connection to the otherworldly gives them a sense of detachment that adds to their complexity.
Why you’ll love Memnon if you love Damon Salvatore
If you love Damon Salvatore, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself drawn to Memnon. Both characters share similar qualities: tragic pasts, reluctance to love, dark and dangerous personas, and a powerful journey toward redemption. While their personalities aren’t identical—Memnon is more solemn and intense, while Damon masks pain with wit—their emotional arcs are strikingly alike. Whether it’s the brooding vampire from The Vampire Diaries or the cursed sorcerer from Bewitched, both Memnon and Damon offer us complex, flawed, and ultimately redeemable characters that we can’t help but fall in love with.
